The Brookline Community Foundation is honored to announce the establishment of the Edward Schluntz Scholarship Fund, created by Brookline High School (BHS) alumni in collaboration with the BHS Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. This fund pays tribute to the extraordinary legacy of Ed Schluntz, a beloved coach, teacher, and athletics director who shaped generations of students during his decades of service at BHS.

Mr. Schluntz began his tenure at Brookline High in 1954 as a football coach and teacher. Over the years, he became a pillar of the school community, ultimately serving as head coach and longtime athletics director. His mentorship and leadership left an indelible mark on thousands of young people, both on and off the field.

“There is no way that we can ever repay or even possibly explain the impact Ed has made on so many, many lives over his lifetime,” says BHS alumnus and fund co-founder, Bob Hillson. “We are so blessed that he was there for us.”

Fellow alumnus and fund co-founder Jack Heavey has been collecting donations for the fund, many accompanied by heartfelt messages about Mr. Schluntz. “Not all of the donations are from athletes,” says Heavey. “We received a note from a 1962 graduate who was a pep squad member and had Mr. Schluntz for homeroom. She described him as so kind and encouraging.” Heavey recently shared several of these messages with Mr. Schluntz, who will turn 99 in May of 2025. “He listened with a big smile on his face,” Heavey says.

Together with BHS alumnus Joe Davis, Hillson and Heavey established the scholarship fund to honor Mr. Schluntz’s lifetime of dedication and to express the deep gratitude of the community he helped build.

Each year, the Edward Schluntz Scholarship Fund will award a scholarship to a deserving BHS student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding leadership, citizenship, and athletic ability, and who has financial need.
